Impaired liver function is a cause of gynecomastia

Liver and gynecomastia - what is the connection?
Liver disease -> Excess estrogen -> Gynecomastia

What does the liver do?

The liver works as a filter that cleans harmful substances from the blood stream and sends them for elimination, including excess estrogen. In an hour through it pass, on average, 8 liters of blood. When the liver works too hard and can not function properly, toxins build up in the system, including estrogen. The liver normally inactivates (denatures) estrogens, and the inactivated estrogens are cleared by the kidney in the urine. Liver is an important part in estrogen elimination. Anything that impairs liver function or ties up the detoxifying function will result in excess estrogen levels. Without the liver breaking down estrogens there is a buldup leading to overdeveloped breast glands, in men (gynecomastia). Full detoxification of estrogen by the liver is essential for hormonal health and prevention of gynecomastia. If you are interested and want to read more and more specialized information, you can search Google for hepatic enzyme transport system "Cytochrome P450"

For us, people with gynecomastia, it is very important to have a healthy liver. This helps to maintain lower levels of estrogen.

Signs of an overloaded liver:
  •  Sluggish fat digestion
  •  Dark circles and puffy eye bags
  •  Skin blemishes
  •  Indigestion
  •  Poor bowel movement
  •  Fatigue or lethargy
  • Bad breath or offensive body odour

What overloads the liver
  • hHepatitis viruses
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Systematic overeating
  • Too much protein in the diet
  • Other preservatives added to food (so-called E's)
  • Pesticides, herbicides
  • Artificial hormones (anabolic steroids)
  • Toxins from the environment
  • Xenoestrogens
In individuals with liver failure or cirrhosis, the liver's ability to properly metabolize hormones such as estrogen may be impaired. Additionally, those with alcoholic liver disease are further put at risk for development of gynecomastia; ethanol may directly disrupt the synthesis of testosterone and the presence of phytoestrogens in alcohol may also contribute to a higher estrogen to testosterone ratio.

Healthy liver and gynecomastia reversal

As the liver plays an important role in estrogen detoxification and gynecomastia reversal, we need to maintain our liver health by having a healthy diet, exercising and supplementing with the right liver tonics! The good news is, that the liver is one of the few organs that can regenerate itself.

Milk thistle is traditionally used for liver disorders. This herb contains silymarin, which is an antioxidant to protect the liver by preventing toxins from entering the liver cells and by stimulating the regenerative ability of the liver. Silymarin also increases the glutathione content of the liver by 35% in healthy subjects. Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying estrogens. Increasing the glutathione content of the liver, thus, increases the capacity for detoxification reactions.

Dandelion is another herb highly regarded for its diuretic and blood cleansing capabilities. It increases bile
flow, thus enhancing the digestion of fats, fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients as well as the elimination of toxins and excess estrogen from the body.

NOW Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator is a proprietary blend of herbs and nutrients designed to support healthy liver function.

Remember, that the liver is essential for proper metabolism of your hormones. If you have problems with your liver, this automatically puts at risk group of people, who are prone to gynecomastia. Examples are alcoholics with liver cirrhosis (picture at the left), which in most cases develop gynecomastia, easily lose muscle and get a kind of female distribution of subcutaneous fat (fat deposited on your butt, hips, gut, or so-called "love handles "

Liver failure is frequently listed as a cause of gynecomastia!
