Xenoestrogens, gynecomastia and feminization of men

The material is aimed at a male audience. The main idea is that xenoestrogens are a major reason for the development of gynecomastia, or in other words, enlarged mammary glands in men, which can sometimes look like small female breasts.

What are Xenoestrogens?

Xenoestrogens are a sub-category of the endocrine disruptor group that specifically have estrogen-like effects. They are estrogen mimickers that are similar enough to human estrogen that they fit into the same cell receptor sites.

Those who read my blog know that development of gynecomastia  or man boobs is caused by increased amounts of female hormones (estrogen) in the male body. High amount of estrogens also leads to reduced amounts of male hormones (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone).

Where the xenoestrogens come from?

We live in the petrochemical era. This era dates from the forties, as a result of technological advances in oil, and its processing. In 1940, one billion pounds of synthetic chemicals were produced. By 1950, the amount had increased to 50 billion, in the late '80s, we produced 500 billion a year. Many of these compounds are toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic. Some of these chemicals such as pesticides, fuels and plastics act as xenoestrogens. They may do so in different ways. Some enhance the production of bad estrogens. Others bind to estrogen receptors, inducing signals for increased cell growth. In our case we are interested in the increased growth of mammary glands, which are one of the tissues with large amounts of estrogen receptors, which automatically makes them very threatened by the bad effect of xenoestrogens.

Real stories about xenoestrogens

In 1938 British scientists synthesized the first xenoestrogens. This is diethylstilbestrol, also known as DES. At that time, DES is considered a miracle drug. It was administered to all women, who have had problems with the pregnancy, because of lack of estrogen. This lack really caused abortions in the first 3 months of pregnancy, but it was too naive to prescribe synthetic hormones, without long-term effects having been tested. Scientists already know that such effects exist. Guess which country has the world's highest percentage of men who suffer from gynecomastia? Exactly - England!

In 1938 Switzerland, another scientist discovers dichlorodiphenyl trichloroethane, or DDT. This is a great xenoestrogens insecticide. At that time, it began to be widely applied in agriculture, and public health programs. Indeed, DTT has saved millions of lives, since it was discovered that it is the most adequate tool against malaria. A study in Israel showed that mortality from breast cancer (according to many researchers, this is the equivalent of gynecomastia in men. Mechanisms of the two diseases are almost identical) sharply decreased, since 1978 in Israel is prohibited the use of pesticides carrying xenoestrogens, including DDT.

Estrogenic effects of xenoestrogens continue to emerge, and in 1980 Tower Chemical Company near Orlando, Florida had an accident in which a large amount of DDE (a product based on DDT) flows into the stream, which flows into Lake Apopka. Soon after the incident, a team of people was called in, to investigate the reduced number of alligators in the lake. One of the investigators describe what we see, as a reversal in sexual development. Not only that male alligators were very few, but at least 25% of them had a deformed penis, in most even having been reduced in size. 25 years later 75% of the eggs flow into the sea dead, or not fertilized. This is pretty convincing evidence, that there is a strong estrogenic effect of this insecticide. Males that used to be muscular find themselves with less muscle mass. They were so affected that their endocrine system began to produce estrogen instead of testosterone. And that's not all, researchers found that 20% of all animals in the lake have some kind of disease associated with gender confusion! I advise you, if you ever go on a trip there not to drink water :)

In 1992, specialists in reproductive medicine from Copenhagen University in Denmark, published in the British women medical journal, reports that sperm counts in industrialized countries has decreased by nearly 50% since 1938. It was big news, but xenoestrogens were again the main suspect.

Since then there has been a tremendous amount of research on rats, which deals with the effects of xenoestrogens. In one such study, pregnant mice were given DES, and then only for 2 days. The effect was that the newborn mouse was a hermaphrodite. When, during pregnancy, the fetus was exposed to xenoestrogens, it was feminized. At the molecular level, males produce female reproductive proteins in their systems. Also, these mice developed prostate cancer.

Another noticeable effect of the impact of xenoestrogens, occurred in Guatemala. This time, it was connected with people. Guatemalan girls entered puberty at the age of only 3-4 years old. This was attributed to the effects of xenoestrogens.

Did you start to see the whole picture?? Xenoestrogens make us feminine. There is research evidence! I'm sure gynecomastia and xenoestrogens are closely related. The problem is, that many men have this problem, but suffer in silence. They hide gynecomastia, and learn to live with it. Not enough noise is being made about gynecomastia, and not enough studies are closely targeted on gynecomastia and xenoestrogens. Almost all the attention is focused on breast cancer, prostate cancer and infertility. Gynecomastia should be added to these diseases. Things that cause them are the same, and are estrogenic chemicals in our daily lives, and the environment!

Until now, I spoke about xenoestrogens and pesticides. Plastics are another great source of xenoestrogens. I will write about them in my next article. Until then, I expect your comments and questions!

Flax seed to prevent and treat gynecomastia

A few days ago, I received a letter via e-mail, from a guy who has gynecomastia. He read in a forum, that a man with gynecomastia had taken every day 5 flaxseed oil capsules, and it helped a lot with his gynecomastia. Flax seeds can really help you! I thought my answer would be interesting and useful to all who read this site. Here it is ....

Omega-3 are very important for the human body, and have a lot of positive effects. I do not think Omega 3 directly affect your gynecomastia, but certainly affect it indirectly, through increased insulin sensitivity, improving the permeability of cell membranes, and it helps you lose weight. In general, one should take one gram of EPA daily. I am also taking Omega-3. My favorute is Now Foods, Omega-3, Molecularly Distilled, 500 Softgels

Flax seed has very interesting compounds in it. Extracted flaxseed oil is rich in ALA, which makes the body’s EPA and DHA – both are omega-3 fatty acids. There is a "but" - some people, have lost their intestinal bacteria, that convert ALA-s into EPA and DHA. So, they do not have any beneffits from ALA.

In flax seed, there is another important ingredient - lignans, which are contained in the shell of the seed. Similar to estrogens, they compete with them, for the estrogen receptor. At the same time, they have far less estrogenic activity. That will occupy estrogen receptors, and leave no place to attach, and stimulate the mammary glands, to grow and form gynecomastia. There was a study to compare them in strength with the effect of the drug Nolvadex (tamoxifen) whitch is SERM (Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator)

Another value of flax seeds is fiber, they help you to go to toilet more often (much needed) and from there, to throw out more of the processed in the liver female hormones (estrogens). Individual fibers are associated with estrogen, and make it less active, and ready for discharge from the body. This will help you improve your ratio of male / female hormones, and from there to combat gynecomastia.

Now, a little bit about things that you have to be careful of in flax seeds, and in particular the intake of large quantities of them.

If you overdo it with the fiber, there is danger to develop deficiency of some of the valuable minerals for the body (Zinc, etc.). Fiber connects to minerals from food and forms undisolvabe salts, and thus prevents their absorption. From my previous articles, you know how dangerous it is for gynecomastia sufferers to have zinc deficiency. So do not overdo the use of flaxseed, as to avoid getting the opposite effect.
• The daily dosage is 2 tablespoons, not more. If you take large amounts of flax seed, there is danger of poisoning yourself with cadmium.
Excessive amount of lignans may lower the levels of testosterone in the body.

Impaired liver function is a cause of gynecomastia

Liver and gynecomastia - what is the connection?
Liver disease -> Excess estrogen -> Gynecomastia

What does the liver do?

The liver works as a filter that cleans harmful substances from the blood stream and sends them for elimination, including excess estrogen. In an hour through it pass, on average, 8 liters of blood. When the liver works too hard and can not function properly, toxins build up in the system, including estrogen. The liver normally inactivates (denatures) estrogens, and the inactivated estrogens are cleared by the kidney in the urine. Liver is an important part in estrogen elimination. Anything that impairs liver function or ties up the detoxifying function will result in excess estrogen levels. Without the liver breaking down estrogens there is a buldup leading to overdeveloped breast glands, in men (gynecomastia). Full detoxification of estrogen by the liver is essential for hormonal health and prevention of gynecomastia. If you are interested and want to read more and more specialized information, you can search Google for hepatic enzyme transport system "Cytochrome P450"

For us, people with gynecomastia, it is very important to have a healthy liver. This helps to maintain lower levels of estrogen.

Signs of an overloaded liver:
  •  Sluggish fat digestion
  •  Dark circles and puffy eye bags
  •  Skin blemishes
  •  Indigestion
  •  Poor bowel movement
  •  Fatigue or lethargy
  • Bad breath or offensive body odour

What overloads the liver
  • hHepatitis viruses
  • Alcohol
  • Drugs
  • Systematic overeating
  • Too much protein in the diet
  • Other preservatives added to food (so-called E's)
  • Pesticides, herbicides
  • Artificial hormones (anabolic steroids)
  • Toxins from the environment
  • Xenoestrogens
In individuals with liver failure or cirrhosis, the liver's ability to properly metabolize hormones such as estrogen may be impaired. Additionally, those with alcoholic liver disease are further put at risk for development of gynecomastia; ethanol may directly disrupt the synthesis of testosterone and the presence of phytoestrogens in alcohol may also contribute to a higher estrogen to testosterone ratio.

Healthy liver and gynecomastia reversal

As the liver plays an important role in estrogen detoxification and gynecomastia reversal, we need to maintain our liver health by having a healthy diet, exercising and supplementing with the right liver tonics! The good news is, that the liver is one of the few organs that can regenerate itself.

Milk thistle is traditionally used for liver disorders. This herb contains silymarin, which is an antioxidant to protect the liver by preventing toxins from entering the liver cells and by stimulating the regenerative ability of the liver. Silymarin also increases the glutathione content of the liver by 35% in healthy subjects. Glutathione is responsible for detoxifying estrogens. Increasing the glutathione content of the liver, thus, increases the capacity for detoxification reactions.

Dandelion is another herb highly regarded for its diuretic and blood cleansing capabilities. It increases bile
flow, thus enhancing the digestion of fats, fat-soluble vitamins and nutrients as well as the elimination of toxins and excess estrogen from the body.

NOW Liver Detoxifier & Regenerator is a proprietary blend of herbs and nutrients designed to support healthy liver function.

Liver cirrhosis is a cause of gynecomastia (man boobs)
Remember, that the liver is essential for proper metabolism of your hormones. If you have problems with your liver, this automatically puts at risk group of people, who are prone to gynecomastia. Examples are alcoholics with liver cirrhosis (picture at the left), which in most cases develop gynecomastia, easily lose muscle and get a kind of female distribution of subcutaneous fat (fat deposited on your butt, hips, gut, or so-called "love handles "

Liver failure is frequently listed as a cause of gynecomastia!

Gynecomastia operation (surgery) - before and after

gynecomastia surgery before after pictures, gyno before after pics
I have never written about an operation of gynecomastia. I saw that many are interested. The operation is the most effective method, and the fastest method, to deal with gynecomastia. Of course there are downsides - it is very expensive, and people go into panic when they hear the word surgery. As with any surgery, there are certain risks.

The link below has pictures from before and after surgery of gynecomastia. These are patients of Dr. Delgado (San Francisco), who leads one of the best Plastic Surgeon practices. He specializes in gynecomastia, and even developed a special technique for its operation. Of course, the services are quite expensive. And yet, here's what you can expect from an operation ...

The onset of gyno. Teenager with an early stage of gynecomastia.

Today I wrote a response to a boy, in a forum. The boy is 14 years old and has complained, that his chest is sore and feels like it has lumps under nipples. There is pain when touched. Classic early signs of gynecomastia!

Here's my answer. I think it would be useful for readers of the blog!
---
Met0s, when I was yonger, I had the same pain and lumps under my nipples. Back then, I did not know what it is. The pain resolved after a few months. However !!... my breasts had grown, and my nipples were puffy). Later, I realized that this is gynecomastia.

Go to the doctor! Let him review your chest and nipples/under nipples, but if he just says "They is puberty gynecomastia, It will disappear!". You should know that 30% of cases do not. You stay with gynecomastia.

Some things you can do:

1. If you drink alcohol, reduce it. Alcohol helps most of your male hormones to become female, and if you have many female hormones, your nipples will become itchy , then sore , and you will start growing small lumps under your nipples.

2. Freshly ground flaxseed stirred into a cup of yogurt. This should relieve the chest pain. Falxseed lignans are natural anti estrogen as powerful as Nolvadex/Tamoxifen, the drug that many bodybuilders use to treat or prevent gynecomastia.

3. Most teenagers have a zinc deficiency. When you do not have enough zinc in the body, male hormones become a lot easier to turn into female ones. I already told you what happens in such a case. Zinc is a natural aromatase enzyme inhibitor. Adequate consumption of Zinc Picolinate (50-100 mg/day) helps prevent testosterone to estrogen conversion. Most at risk of zinc deficiency are:

-athletes (you enter into this group)
-adolescent (and here you go)
-those who masturbate much, because sperm is very rich in zinc.
-eaters of cereals and breads, because they contain substances that interfere with absorption of zinc

4. If you have a lot of body fat, lose weight! Fat cells produce the aromatase enzyme, which converts testosterone to estrogen. High estrogen levels = GYNECOMASTIA!. In fact, most of the estrogen in males (and in post-menopausal women) comes from the conversion of testosterone in fat cells. Carrying more body fat for males means not only more estrogen, but also less testosterone!

Remember the signs of gynecomastia development - Itchy, sore, lumps, puffiness.

During mammary tissue growth (the onset of gynecomastia), you may notice the following symptoms -

· Puffy or swollen nipples
· Overly sensitive nipples
· Itchiness around the nipples

This is the critical point where it's time to do something before a lump developes!!!

Please help with links

Hello friends! I want to ask you a favor! For the past several months, during which this blog has existed, there are not any links to it. This prevents much of its popularization! I would be grateful to anyone who can help with gynecomastia links to this blog. It is clear to me, that nobody wants to put a link to a site where the main theme are men with boobs! The link does not necessarily have to be in a conspicuous place. It may not even be seen! This is a good way to say thanks, if you find useful information on my site for gynecomastia.

Gynecomastia and hormone metabolism

If you read the blog here, you're probably already aware that, gynecomastia is related to hormones in your body. If you want to learn more about it, you will need to learn how it works. The matter is not so easy, but I am trying to present it in the most simplified form. After a while, I will begin to write an article about the metabolism of sex hormones, in the body. There are many interesting things that will be useful, even for someone without gynecomastia. Several times I have mentioned, that even if all the tips here do not help to cure gynecomastia, they will have many positive side effects on your health!
